Technology – Coding

As part of this section – Technology, we had to ensure that technology was used by our pupils. Each classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards and iPads; technology has become a part of every-day life in Ballyduff N.S.

Throughout all the classes in the school, pupils of every age have also used whiteboards, iPads, cameras and laptops. As you can see from our submission, we implement technology in our day-to-day teaching and learning, with Maths and Science at the forefront of this. Our interactive whiteboards are used individually in each room and also for whole school activities such as choir practice, assembly and quizzes.

Children in the senior classes were introduced to coding. www.hourofcode.org was one of the sites used to lead the coding sessions. Before the children worked collaboratively on developing games, they were asked a number of questions to see what their prior understanding of coding was.

  1. What is coding?
  2. Who uses code

Using our schools Ipads and laptops we then participated in a number of coding workshops. The children loved these workshops and really enjoyed following all the steps to create their own games. The children loved the idea of making their own decisions to influence how their game would look and operate.

Just as the older classes participated in coding workshops, the junior classes used the Bee Bots to explore coding and technology. As you can see they had great fun working together!
